What can BWA do for children and young people?
Support in Refuge Accommodation
Two thirds of refuge residents are children; our aim is to make a child’s stay a happy and memorable one. Services for children in the refuges have continued to develop, so that our qualified staff now offer an after school club, teen-time, under 5’s sessions and ‘shared play’ which encourages mums and children to play together in a well-equipped play room.
Specialist Children’s Workers support women and children in finding local school and nursery places. The refuges also have excellent links with other service providers such as health visitors and pre-school workers.
All children receive a welcome pack full of activities and information about the refuge

Family Support Project
The Family Support Project works with women and children who have experienced or are experiencing domestic violence. Whether they have been directly involved in the abuse or have been a witness to abuse experienced by others, we provide individual and joint support to women and children.
The Project is available to listen and support women and children through their worries, offering a safe environment for them to talk and share their thoughts. This includes providing time and space for children to talk about their thoughts and feelings and allowing them to play, have fun and take part in activities.

Schools Project
The Schools Project provides a fun and informative training package to raise awareness around domestic violence for schools and other settings in Birmingham. The project provides free training for children, young people and professionals; challenges negative myths and stereotypes held around domestic violence; provides information, skills and knowledge to allow children and young people to access support networks.
